VERY Rare -- HUGE Archive. Fresh from a prominent estate in Upstate New York. Vintage, Old, Original - NOT Reproductions - Guaranteed!

Unique collections such as this do not show up very often on the marketplace, and are very hard to find. NEVER offered on the market until now - FRESH. Peerless Transparent Watercolors were developed in 1885 by Charles F.

After many years of revolutionary chemical research, he developed the self blending line of Peerless Transparent Watercolors in sheet form. His unwavering ideal was to create an original form of presentation for watercolors. After many years of perseverance, he successfully developed Color Film, or paper leaflet paint as many used to call them. Watercolors had never been offered in dry form and the novelty of the idea seemed to shock the artistic sense of the professional colorist. Even after 122 years, the self blending Peerless Transparent Watercolors still shock the amateur as well as the professional colorist! Nicholson was certainly a genius. The formula he created for his special watercolors in 1885 has never changed. After 122 years, the same process is used in the creation of the colors. -Rochester, March 15, 1952 is listed as a fruit plate and/or nurserymen's plate producer in the Rochester city directories, 1884-88 and 1891-97. In the 1880's his business was at 14 Sheridan Park, in 1891 at 281 East Main Street, from 1892 through 1896 at 233 East Main Street, and in 1897 at 75 Meigs Street. In 1890-91 he acquired J. ; his 1891 advertisement in the city directory reads: Nicholson Co.

Manufacturers of Fruit and Flower Plates No. 281 East Main Street, Rochester, N. Our Speciality-"Hand Painted Plates". An article in the Rochester Union and Advertiser for November 10, 1896, noted that the Nicholson Company had closed the day before and that its effects were advertised for sale.

The article continued: The Nicholson Company at one time did a flourishing business. It was engaged in the preparation of colored plates for nurserymen. Lately its business has been hurt by the keen competition of rivals, who were able to turn their plates on the market by the use of less expensive methods. Nicholson's principal business was watercolors.

For at least sixty years beginning in the mid-1880's (except for a few years around the turn of the century) he manufactured watercolor tints for the photographic trade. The archive offered here includes 2 large books by Nicholson on how to hand-color photos - step by step. Each book has numerous examples and real photos. There are also 2 albums with photo and paper samples from the Defender Company. Other albums have samples of prints that can be ordered for handcoloring, as well as many loos prints - some colored and others uncolored.

There are catalogs, sample watercolors, kits, numerous advertising pieces, original letters, original photos - including mark-up photos used to make the catalogs. Of particular interest are the art deco style lamp lamp photos and catalog, which are exceptionally rare.

I have not counted the pieces in the archive, but there are many hundreds of items - I would estimate at least 1,500-2,000 pieces. Including items in the albums. NOTE: Items look better than shown in photos below and there is MUCH MORE! Photos and scans below show just some of the archive - there is much more.

If you collect 19th / 20th century fine art, Americana history, industry / chemical engineering, advertisement ad, hand-colored photography, etc. This is a treasure and one you will not see again!
