Marked with owner "C PRIELMAYER" twice on the front end, and once on the back end. Some tiny nail or pin holes on the left side. A nice clean crisp plane! Marked with owner "T McKENNEY" on the front end. Would really benefit from a cleaning.
Marked with owner "F MURRAY" on the front end. Some scratches, would benefit from a cleaning.Marked with owner "M J SHERRY" on the left side. Some specks of red paint to clean off, some staining, and some chips and dings along the lower edges. And a number 20 round. The Reed family made planes in Utica, New York, from about 1820 to 1894.
Please see the book American Wooden Planes 5th Edition for a fascinating description of the various family members, and also a discussion about some counterfeit Reed planes made back then. The compassed 8 and the 17 round look like they had some tape around them at some time in the past. It only left an odd fading pattern in the compassed 8, but when it was removed on the 17 round, it took some slivers of wood with it, mostly on the upper left side.
That happened before these planes got to me, not sure why anyone would put tape around them. Condition of all 8 is generally good, with some individual comments above. Most would benefit from a cleaning, and the irons have varying amounts of rust and pitting. All of the irons and wedges appear to be original to each plane. The winner gets all 8 planes! (but see below if you are in Canada).
I sell what I enjoy, and I collect antique woodworking tools and I enjoy photography! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. So please keep watching my auctions as I have LOTS more to list! Or if there is something specific that you are looking for, please let me know so that I can get it listed for you to consider.
Searching my listings: I have lots to see! That will lead you to my extensive system of categories.
You might ask: How can I know when you start new listings? Descriptions, and auctions with pictures only of the left side because the right side was trashed. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. What goes around, comes around.
However, that doesn't mean that I won't make an occasional mistake. The US Post Office has five sizes of their Flat Rate boxes, plus padded Flat Rate envelopes. So I wont do that for you, or to you.Every year the US Postal Service raises rates in mid to late January, and this year is no exception. These charges are the buyers responsibility. PACKAGING: Please check my feedback -- I package well. I hope someday I will meet some of you as we trudge the happy road of tool collecting! If you have questions about anything I have listed, especially about how to pay for your new treasure, please ask.
