Waterman New York 414 Sterling 925 Silver Filigree & BHR Fountain Pen 1905. 14K EF Full Flex Nib. Works and Writes as when New. Made in New York, USA between 1905 & 1910. This beautiful pen is in fantastic condition.
Over 110 years old yet works and writes as well today as the day it was made. Fabulous piece of history that can be used and enjoyed daily.
Handsome to look at yet also practical to use. The pen itself is made of Solid Sterling Silver 925 thick filigree over BHR (Black Hard Rubber) model 14. The Silverwork is hand made in their New York factory. Such skills are lost today. The Art Nouveau floral design is timeless elegance personified. The BHR is still Jet Black with zero oxidation etc. This pen has not been polished. It came to me ALL Black as the Silver was also almost Black with 100+ years of tarnish.
I used a non abrasive BHR friendly British Museum Silver cleaner to remove the tarnish. This does not effect or oxidize the BHR. Rare as most of these BHR filigree pens turn Brown as BHR reacts badly with traditional Silver polish or Simichrome etc etc.
So this pen once again has its beauty of contrast between Silver and Black (Night and Day) as it was designed to look. Has to be seen in person to fully appreciate its quality and charming good looks. The pen has no Cracks, Splits or Repairs etc. The Silver work is fantastic on these early examples being much thicker silver.
All the Waterman, Made in USA and Sterling etc Imprints are DEEP and easy to read as new. The depth and clarity of the imprints on these early Silver pens is far superior than the 1920's examples.
Because the Silver is thicker the imprints can be deeper and more Bold. Even the BHR Imprints on the tail end are still superb and easy to read still. Very rare to find these imprints still readable. As they often get worn away by the cap being posted on tail end or by being polished to remove oxidation etc.The 414 imprint is also clear on bottom of tail end. Overall once in the hand to the naked eye looks Amazing still considering it is over 110 years old. For as beautiful as this pen is to look at it writes even better. This pen has a SuperStar nib for the writing. Its New York 4 Nib is so creative its only limitation is the imagination and writing ability of its user. Writes with a Fine to Extra Fine line at normal pressure. Has Extra Fine Line side Stroke. Very elegant writer at normal pressure. Very rare to find such perfect original early Waterman nib so original with amazing long Tines (Nib Fingers) and extra fine flat untouched Iridium Tips. However as Fine as this pen can write at light pressure this chap really comes alive the moment you exercise it's wonderful flexibility. This nib can flex from EF to past BB on the down stroke when varying levels of pressure is applied. A nib that can write ALL line widths. The flex is quite user friendly in that it ONLY flexes upon user command never by itself. The flex is not Soft, Loose or Twitchy.
Perfectly Controlled with excellent Spring back. A nib this RARE and special should not be put in the hands of a complete novice. If you have never used a Fine flex nib before then this is perhaps not the pen for you if you intend to write with it. As with ANY EF to F full Flex nib you cannot just throw this nib around the page with carefree abandon flexing on upstrokes etc. It will Dig In and Spray Ink Dots of Protest before finally Crossing its Tines like fingers in hope more than anything of a reprieve from the butcher holding it to finally let go. However in the hands of an experienced Flex writer this fabulous pristine Nib will offer up writing so beautiful it leaves the users jaw on the floor. This is a thoroughbred nib it needs an experienced rider with the confidence to push the limits. Then this nib simply leaves ALL competition in its dust. As good as it gets.. The feed also offers perfect Ink Flow. NEVER skipped a beat during its writing test. ALL ink comes direct from within barrel with zero nib dips in ink etc to help.
Indeed it was the feeds that L. Waterman invented that really made them the Number 1 pen company in the World from 1895 to 1925. Waterman feeds are without question the best in the world throughout this era. Its a BIG part of why they work so well. This is an Eye Dropper or Pipette filler pen.
To fill with ink could not be any easier. Simply unscrew off the front section part you hold when writing.
Now take Pipette full of ink and squirt it directly inside the Barrel until 80percent full. Now screw back on the front section. Takes less than 10 seconds and is a lot less messy than you imagine. These hold an enormous amount of ink. So only need filling rarely.
C ome s ready to write just add your favourite colour bottled ink... Perfect as a gift or treat yourself to a wonderful collectible fountain pen that can be used and enjoyed daily..
